Welcome to the second Commodores newsletter.
Our 2020 21 season kicked off on the 10 th October with strong attendance from members, invited
guests and friends of WYC attending. A cake and coffee celebrating WYC achievements at the State
Australian Sailing Awards. Following the opening VMR, Tas Canoe and Sailboats all took to the water
showing the public we are open for all to enjoy our activities.
Our COVID19 plans are working effectively at WYC with sign the QR Code making it much easier for
attendees and providing notification and details to our COVID officer. Since the seasons start, we
have allowed more people into our safety boats and yachts but have restricted Sailability programs
till after Christmas.
Canteen volunteers have been busy with Bighart now committed to coordinate this important
aspect of WYC with help from our members.
Five of our youth members and families travelled to Hobart to attend two days of training with some
staying for an extra two days to compete in the Tas Youth Championships. Well done to Nick and
Penny for your results.
Auston has the role of Marine Rescue Unit Commander and I encourage members to seek out
Auston for Marine Rescue related questions or information. Well done to Phil Tidey and Ela for
gaining their Elements of Shipboard Safety qualifications.
The new Clubhouse Lease Agreement between the WYC and Waratah Wynyard Council has
progressed to a stage where key aspects around Fees, Use and Term have been agreed. We continue
to work with WWC to resolve some minor wording problems within the lease document as
suggested by our legal advisor. The current stalled building works is because of Building Permit
issues relating to fire and accessibility.
Our racing program has expanded to each morning and Saturday afternoons starting at 1.30
(weather permitting). Saturday morning programs will be split into Green fleet and Racing.
Thank you for those who have already paid membership for the upcoming season. For those who
have not paid we remind you that participants cannot go on water at WYC programs without
payment or registration in place to ensure that you and WYC are covered in case of an incident.
Additionally, your membership assists cover our operating expenses.
We have expanded the pool of Dingy Instructors to have Warwick, Alan, Ela and Auston who are now
accredited to deliver programs. Thank you to all for helping to “spread the load” A Start Sailing 1
program is underway every fortnight for three sessions with eight participants attending.
We are looking forward to a busy and safe month ahead as we settle into our programs for 2020 21.
Yours in Sailing.
